Go to http://www.bordeauxwinevilla.com/ and make your reservation, bearing in mind that each tour is a complete day.

The power and prestige of French wine is based in Bordeaux. Here the terms Right Bank and Left Bank refer to the banks of the river Gironde. The town of Blaye, home of Villa St Simon, is situated on the Right bank of the Gironde. On the Left bank are the Medoc, Haut-Medoc and Graves regions with a river ferry service connecting the two banks – making Blaye an ideal base for wine tours.

  1. The Left bank tour

This tour typically starts with the ferry crossing from Blaye to La Marque – usually at 10:00am.

Depending on the time of year and guest preferences the morning tour will include one of chateaux Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Latour or Margeaux.

We have lunch at one of the restaurants patronized mainly by local winemakers and then do the second tour in the afternoon. In the process we drive much of the Great Chateau Road where we have the opportunity to admire and photograph some of the magnificent castles.

The afternoon tour will be one of the chateaux Pichon Longueville Baron, Pichon Longueville de la Lande, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Beychevelle, Cos d’Estournel, again depending on guest preference and time of year.

This tour is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The price is €93 per person, which includes the ferry fare, lunch and chateau admissions.

  1. The Cotes de Blaye/Bourg tour

With attention fixated on the famous chateaux of the left-bank, here just across the river the jewels of Cotes de Blaye and Cotes de Bourg are still a best-kept secret, much to the pleasure of our palates and the advantage of our pockets.

A typical tour here would be a visit and tasting at a chateau in the morning, followed by lunch either at the chateau, or at a rustic local restaurant in the heart of the wine lands. After lunch, a second visit and tasting. We meet the winemakers, see how they live and make their wines, taste and buy – it is great value and affordable.

Chateaux that we visit include Cantinot, Rouselle, La Rose Bellevue, Le Cone, Bellevue Gazin and Grollet.

This tour is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The tour fee of €48 per person does not include lunch.

Welcome to Villa St Simon, gateway to the essence of Bordeaux!

Whether you are a wine buff or simply enjoy wine, we have something for you.

Most evenings guests have the opportunity to join Les in the wine cellar where he presents Debunking de wine, a light-hearted ramble through Bordeaux wines and wine tasting.

For the serious wine buffs – Les offers the Blaye Wine Academy course. Please see details below

Debunking de wine

This two hour coached tasting and wine presentation is aimed at people who simply enjoy wine and are interested in enriching this pleasure.

We debunk all things pretentious and get down to basics. You will learn -

  • How to read Bordeaux wine labels
  • How to store, present and serve wine
  • How to see the age and alcohol intensity of wine
  • How to liberate and capture the bouquet of wine
  • The anatomy and the techniques of tasting
  • About pairing food with wine

The wines we focus on are the classic red Bordeaux blends, but much of what we cover is equally applicable to other wines. We meet in the cellar at 6:00pm most evenings, except Saturdays. The presentation includes tasting at least three Bordeaux wines, whereafter we often stroll to a nearby restaurant for dinner. The cost is €25.00 per person.

Wines of Bordeaux – A Blaye Wine Academy course

This two day course is aimed at wine aficionados who wish to advance their knowledge in depth, specifically as regards the wines of Bordeaux. We cover the following aspects-

  • History of French wine
  • How to read French labels
  • Wine laws and AOC
  • Terroir and Viniculture
  • Vinification – techniques and trends
  • Grapes varieties and the art of blending
  • Chateaux that shaped Bordeaux
  • Food paring with Bordeaux blends

The program starts at 10:00am on each of two consecutive days.

Course content reading precedes and interposes lectures/discussions.

The course fee is €245 per person which excludes accommodation and includes course material as well as the Bordeaux wines tasted.

Participants will receive a Blaye Wine Academy course completion certificate.

The course is presented by Les Kellen by arrangement.

Courses are currently scheduled for the following weekends.

  • Friday 9 April 2010
  • Friday 23 April 2010

Participants arrive on Friday evenings and course duration is from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon.

Course dates can be scheduled to your convenience for groups of at least four participants.

Please email your preferences to Les Kellen who will call you to discuss arrangements.

A brief history

Posted by – 11/01/2010

“Lovers of Bordeaux wines will surely know that the town of Blaye is the true heart of Bordeaux. Perhaps that is why in 1999 I fell in love with Villa St Simon – the beautiful 1860 Maison de maitre – in the heart of Blaye.”

Leslie Kellen

Les bought the property 16 Rue St Simon and spent the next two years bringing the interior back from rubble and animal-shed to its former beauty. Restoration is a never-ending love affair and it continues – every year revealing a bit more of the original masterpiece.

Les’ love for wine is only overshadowed by his passion for people and in August 2003 he launched his hospitality enterprise – Villa St Simon – providing B&B accommodation primarily for English speaking, Bordeaux wine appreciators. Substantially furnished with antiques, the villa ambiance is authentic 19th century French living and the mood casual and homey.

Les’ passion for the wines of Bordeaux has opened many doors and guests enjoy the entrée this brings to vignerons, chateaux and tastings. He also coaches wine appreciation – casually over tastings in the villa cellar most evenings and formally through Blaye Wine Academy by appointment.

Wine culture permeates the villa in décor and substance. Suites are named after local chateaux and the breakfast room is a showcase of local wines that guests may purchase at privileged prices. Often a winemaker will join guests and friends in the villa cellar – to talk about the making and the taste of the essence of Bordeaux.

In October 2006, with the help of Internet-savvy friends, the Villa St Simon website was launched.

What a delight to discover how many people from all over the world are drawn to Bordeaux – often because of the wines but also for the food, markets, weather, history, culture and sheer beauty of the vineyards and chateaux. Today Les’ vision is a reality. The Villa Guest Book tells the story – Villa St Simon is indeed Home from home in Bordeaux to hundreds of visitors every year.

Les / Julian,

Good evening to you both.  I am back in Manhattan and working away….but wanted to take a minute to say THANK YOU to you both for being such great hosts while we were in Blaye/Bordeaux.  The people we met (yourselves included) truly made our vacation memorable.  The food, the lifestyle and the scenery was all great.  Thank you for welcoming us and I will definitely make positive mention to stay with you if I hear of any travelers heading to France!

We had a great time and I have already gone into a huge wine shop here and been able to locate some great French bottles at various price points to enjoy as a result of having learned some tips.

Treasure hunting in Bordeaux

All living is meeting – so said Martin Buber. We have it written on the chalkboard in the tasting room here in Villa St Simon. If all living is meeting, then meeting with wine is living well.

Here in the midst of the many unsung heroes of Blaye vineyards, we are lucky to live very well indeed. With attention fixated on the famous chateaux of left-bank Medoc, here, just across the river, the jewels of Cote de Blaye and Cote de Bourg are still a best-kept secret – much to the pleasure of our palates and the advantage of our pockets.

Of course there are wiser ones, including actor Gerard Depardieu who has three hectares in Blaye where he produces the superb “Confiance”.  At around €40 it is clearly not one of Blaye’s most affordable wines but certainly it is one of its best wines. Only around 3000 bottles of this wine are produced each year hence the higher than usual price for a Cote de Blaye.

It is perhaps not so well known that wines on the right bank of the Gironde, were produced as early as the 12th century, while the commencement of production of wine in the Medoc only began in the 17th century. Blaye and Bourg are therefore part of Bordeaux’s oldest wine traditions.

2005 Is probably the best vintage in this area for around 50 years and 2006 is not that far behind. Informed Bordeaux wine lover who are also wine investors tell me that Cote de Blaye and Cote de Bourg wines bought “in primeur” bring better returns than even the first growths of the Medoc – you decide.

Names to look for

In Blaye:

Chateau Bellevue Gazan                  Chateau Cantinot                        Chateau Raz Caman

Chateau Chasserat                            Chateau Neuve                           Chateau Monconseil

In Bourg:

Chateau Rouselle                                Chateau Civrac                           Chateau  Nodoz

Well made organic wines are also to be found in this region, but more about these another time.
